Yalta collection by Gosia Baczyńska

Fashion designers are increasingly commenting on the surrounding reality through clothing. In her Yalta collection for autumn/winter 2014-2015, Gosia Baczyńska refers to her family's experiences. After the Second World War, as a result of the Yalta Conference, the family was forced to leave the Eastern Borderlands and settle in the newly annexed territories in the west of Poland. The collection is a visual metaphor for the cross-section of Polish society, and the details of the outfits allude to the clothing of Poles forced to migrate. The Yalta collection is a combination of dresses evoking the old clothes of the aristocracy, uniforms and working-class Soviet style quilted jackets. We may notice some elements of paper cutout art referring to Borderland folk art, military collars and medals symbolising heroism, which instead of national symbols are adorned with the works of art appreciated by the designer.

Gosia Baczyńska is the first Polish designer invited by the French Fashion Federation to show her collections at the Paris Prêt-à-porter Fashion Week. In February 2014, she showed her Yalta collection and since then has attended the event four times. The brand created by the designer is one of the most recognisable in the Polish fashion market and has had a strong influence on it for two decades.

The dresses on show come from the collection of the Central Museum of Textiles in Łódź. They were purchased in 2022 under the National Institute for Museums and Public Collections programme titled 'Expansion of Museum Collections.'

Gosia Baczyńska is a graduate of the Faculty of Ceramics and Glass at the Academy of Art and Design in Wrocław. She also designs original collections of tiles for Paradyż My Way brand.
